TEUNIS 332 HAS DIED (2002)

Nicole Adriaansen, Phyrso International, Volume 5, No. 2

In the prime of his life, the popular studbook stallion Teunis 332 died (2002) as the result of a stomach perforation.  He would have been 12 years old in March.  This large stallion had many admirers.  As a result, this sad news traveled like a shock wave through TheNetherlands and abroad.

Teunis 332 (sire:  Gerlof) was born on March 8, 1990 as Valko in the town of Dreumel (Province of Gelderland) at the breeding farm owned by Chris Reuvers.  Reuvers bred him out of Gertruda, star and preferent (sire:  Lammert, pedigree 28).  Further up the pedigree, we find Waltrude star and preferent (sire:  Tsjalling) and Lyts, star (sire:  Wessel).  Bertus Toonen and Cor de Jong bought the promising colt as a joint venture and presented him at the 1993 stallion inspection.  Referred to performance judging, he had to drop out.  For the rest of that year, the powerful show-off was ridden by Martina de Jong.  De Jong and Toonen decided to have him do the performance judging in Germany where he not only passed but even became the all-breed champion.  Heartened by the success, Teunis’ owners decided to present him at the inspection in Leeuwarden in 1994.  Once again, he was referred to the performance judging; this time he made it to the finish line.  Cor de Jong sold his share in the stallion to Bertus Toonen who then became the full owner.

Teunis turned out to be a favorite stallion and in 1998 was approved for his progeny after three years of stud service.  The jury report states that his foals were very impressive for their development, front and happy nature.  The offspring assessed were generally uniform in type and movement; when fully mature, they were a bit too heavy and massive.  The genes he passed on for long forelegs were seen as positive.  In general, his descendants often had a walk that was somewhat strained and a high-stepping suspended trot, although a few of them were somewhat wide in the knees.

He made a substantial contribution to the breed:  over the last eight years, 1957 mares were inseminated, 293 of them in 2001.  A total of 1196 of his descendants have been registered.  Teunis is survived by 66 star mares, 117 studbook mares, 5 foalbook star stallions, 9 star geldings, 14 studbook geldings and 2 approved stallions, Nanning and Monte.  Teunis also produced various champions at the regional breeders’ shows in recent years, examples being his daughters Tjitske van de Hamelspoel (show at Vrouwenpolder), Vrouwkje van Ravensbos (Esbeek), and Teunie J. (Blauwhuis), all of which became regional show champions in 2001.  Annabel van de Kievitshof, Toonen’s own mare, became champion of the younger mares and general reserve champion in Helden Paningen.  Letje van de Bist was a double champion in Zolder, Belgium.  Teunis’ son Maine fan Twillens is doing well in show driving:  he won the competition for best show driving horse during the central mare inspections.

With the death of Teunis 332, breeders have lost a supplier of size, front and movement.  The Toonen family has lost a friend and the standard bearer of their stud station.
